The word no can be so powerful. Saying ‘No’ can open up so many doors—opportunities that aren’t just good, but GREAT for our health, our relationships, our work life, and our overall well-being. In other words, “no” can be a good thing even though it can be portrayed as negative.
Mindful Listening
Recently, I had some hearing loss in one ear. To help with the issue, my doctor prescribed a single hearing aid. When I was asked what it was like wearing one hearing aid, I often found myself saying it feels like the “Marianne Show” all day long. You see, when I wear the hearing aid, I feel like I’m talking on a microphone. Then I realize that it isn’t always the Marianne Show?

A powerful piece of advice: “Start Streaking.”
Three months after the suboccipital craniectomy, I went to see the Neurosurgeon who performed the operation. His advice to me was: “Start Streaking.” He explained that he’s been streaking for eight years. And no, my doctor was not suggesting that I exercise naked. His streak was going on the treadmill for 40 minutes a day (he started with 20 minutes and has worked up to 40 minutes).

When those thoughts lean into complaints—like “I always catch this red light,” “I’m terrible with names,” or “I’m just getting too old”—they interrupt your highest good. Flaxseed, what is it? Mindful Nutrition
Flaxseed, also known as linseed, is called a “super-food” or a nutritional powerhouse because it’s packed with nutrients. Rich in dietary fiber and high in quality protein, flaxseed is a good source of lignans which may reduce cancer risk. Also, high in Omega 3 fatty acids, flaxseed improves good cholesterol and may lower blood pressure. Fortunately, flaxseeds are not only healthy, but also tasty and have a mild nutty flavor.

Peacefully flowing into fall
I have to admit that I resist flowing into fall. For as long as I can remember, at the end of the summer, I’ve been sad to see summer end. Summer has always been my favorite season. I celebrate my birthday at the beginning of summer. Spending day and/or night at the beach in summertime brings me true joy. I have also enjoyed the slower pace that summertime brings. Some people dislike the hot temperatures of the summer. But compared to the cold weather, I’ve always enjoyed the warmer temperatures of the summer. It’s no wonder I’ve resisted the transition from summer to fall.

Yoga, start where you are!
Acknowledging that this self-care is needed is paramount to our resilience. For instance, in the yogic text, the yoga sutra, the great sage Patanjali writes in the sutra 1.1 – atha yogānuśāsanam. In other words, “Now is the time for Yoga to Begin. The time for yoga is Now“.
