How to Choose Joy When Stressed

What brings you JOY?

Is it spending quality time with your favorite people? Getting your body moving with exercise? Soaking up the sun as you watch a beautiful sunrise? Maybe it’s smiling, rewatching your favorite movie, taking a peaceful walk on the beach, dancing, or meditating. It could even be as simple as going to sleep just 30 minutes earlier, listening to a hilarious podcast, or taking a grounding yoga class with a teacher who inspires you.

Joy is the powerful emotion evoked by well-being, alignment, and fulfillment. It is a state of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good, satisfying, or meaningful.

The good news? Joy isn't just a random occurrence—it's a skill. According to Mindful Magazine, “Joy is a capacity we all have that can be trained and developed—it is a primary component of psychological well-being, encompassing moments of appreciation, enduring contentment and a sense of confidence and gratitude.”

Cultivating Joy in Times of Stress

When we are stressed, burnt out, or overwhelmed, it becomes incredibly hard to see or feel the good things around us. So, how do you intentionally choose joy when you feel like giving up?

Joy requires practice. By actively training your mind to spot positive moments, you change your default mental state over time. Here are 8 actionable ways to cultivate, generate, and choose joy in your daily life:

  1. Find Gratitude Every Day: Start a daily gratitude journal. Write down five specific things every single day for which you are genuinely grateful.

  2. Invite Joy Through Self-Care: Prioritizing yourself is an open invitation to happiness. Make a non-negotiable routine of weekly or daily self-care to refill your cup.

  3. Set a Joyful Daily Intention: Begin each morning by focusing on one joyful thought and let that positive energy guide your decisions throughout the day.

  4. Send a Thank-You Note: Expressing appreciation builds a deep connection. Write a handwritten note or text to someone who did something kind or special for you.

  5. Distribute Joy Freely: Share positive energy with no strings attached. Give kind words, small compliments, or helpful acts of giving without expecting anything in return.

  6. Prioritize Daily Fun: Having fun is a powerful stress-reliever and a natural joy-generator. Taking moments to play and laugh is highly beneficial for your nervous system.

  7. Actively Notice Micro-Moments of Joy: Start to pay attention to the small, beautiful details throughout your day. You will begin to notice wonderful things that have always been right in front of you.

  8. Smile on Purpose: Smile intentionally—even when you are alone. The simple physical act of smiling can trigger biochemical pathways that help you experience genuine joy.

Remember: even if you only take a few seconds every day to notice just one positive, joyful thing, it will eventually become an effortless habit.

Choose JOY!
